The big difference from other platforms: no animation

Twitch and Discord both support animated emotes, but YouTube membership emoji are static images only. An animated GIF cannot be used even if you prepare one.

If you are rolling out the same emote across several platforms, you need both a moving version and a still version.

The trap of designing at 480px

480×480px is considerably larger than the other platforms' specs. Tuning your design while looking at it that big is exactly how it ends up falling apart in chat.

  • Fine detail and small decoration disappear at the size chat actually renders
  • More text is still legible at 480px, so it is easy to keep cramming information in

Treat 480px as the upload resolution and nothing more, and make design decisions at the small display size.

How to approach a multi-platform rollout

  1. Design against the smallest display size

    Being identifiable in chat (around 24–28px) comes before everything else.

  2. Work at high resolution and scale down to each spec

    Making it small and enlarging it blurs the edges. Work large and scale down.

  3. Export per platform constraints

    Animation support, file size limits and the number of required sizes all differ.
